UU World: Dallas Church Raises $20K for Wells in South Sudan

For Lent this year, friends and members of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas turned soda, coffee, and wine into water: They gave up those drinks and used the money they saved to create a $20,000 fund — almost three times their goal — that will be used to drill two wells in villages in South Sudan And it’s all because of Bol Deng Malual, 25, one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan." Bol is one of more than 30,000 young boys who were displaced or orphaned during a civil war in Sudan between 1983 and 2005. Early adolescence is often a time when a child’s appreciation of the magic that younger children see everywhere in the world becomes squelched or outright ignored. Wide-eyed wonder about life and the universe isn’t “cool” and gaining the respect of their peers often becomes tantamount. By the time they have become teenagers, most children have already developed that ever-present internal critic that haunts adults. The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) is a 40-year-old network of faith-based investors exercising their power as active shareowners to transform companies. Together, ICCR members promote sustainable practices through engagement with company management. As an active member of ICCR for many years, the UUA has partnered with other faith groups on numerous campaigns. UU Board and the Doctrine of Discovery: Accountability in Action

When our Association’s Arizona Immigration Ministry met with our social justice partners there, we received one clear request for an agenda item at GA 2012. Our partners said that the single most important piece of business we could do at GA 2012 was to study and repudiate the Doctrine of Discovery and support the full implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. Further, they asked us to have our congregations study this issue and how it is related to the ongoing oppression of indigenous peoples whose lands straddle the US-Mexico border. Dr. Daniel McKanan Receives 2011 Frederic G. Melcher Book Award
On Tuesday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m. the UUA will award the Frederic G. Melcher Book Award to author and Harvard Divinity School Senior Lecturer Dr. Daniel McKanan for his book, Prophetic Encounters: Religion and the American Radical Tradition. McKanan's groundbreaking, definitive work treats the histories of religion and the Left as a single history, showing that American radicalism is a continuous tradition rather than a collection of disparate movements. The 2012 edition of The Unitarian Universalist Pocket Guide is now available at the UUA Bookstore. Congregations Encouraged to Study Doctrine of Discovery

Many people didn’t learn about the Doctrine of Discovery in school. But those who attend Justice General Assembly in June will learn about it there. In brief, the Doctrine of Discovery is the premise that European Christian explorers who “discovered” other lands had the authority to claim those lands and subdue, even enslave, peoples of those lands simply because they were not Christian. UUA Persuades Verizon to Protect Transgender Workers

For each of the last five years, the UUA has filed shareholder resolutions with Verizon Communications to urge the corporation to add “gender identity or expression” to its non-discrimination policy. As part of a weeklong visit with interfaith partners in Japan, UUA President Rev. Peter Morales spoke at Rissho Kosei-kai (RKK) on Sunday, March 4. RKK is a lay-Buddhist movement with approximately 6 million members in Japan and around the world. Rissho Kosei-kai generously simulcast Rev. UUA Offers New Immigration Curriculum for Children's Religious Education
The UUA's Ministries and Faith Development Staff Group has announced publication of a new curriculum titled "With Justice and Compassion: Immigration Sessions for Children’s Religious Education," by Mandy Neff. This curriculum invites children in grades 1-3 and children in grades 4-6 to explore their own family stories while learning about immigration in the United States. Annual Program Fund Contribution Remains the Same
After much discernment with congregational leaders and considering the financial challenges still facing many of our congregations, the Rev. Peter Morales, our Unitarian Universalist Association President, decided that the requested Annual Program Fund contribution will remain at the current $58 per member for the new Fiscal Year 2013 (begins July 1, 2012). The dwindling of the sun’s light in autumn is a reminder that even as the old year dies, so must all living things. The shaman helps the tribe to accept this universal dying, to understand it is necessary for new life. When the daylight hours are shortest, we long for assurance that spring will return, that once again the warm sun will nurture growing things and make the earth green. Community Minister Helps 'One Child at a Time'

The Rev. Donald E. Robinson had already had a long career helping disadvantaged children in Washington, D.C., when he took on one more gargantuan task. In 1991, after more than 30 years of working with Washington youth in juvenile halls and community programs, Robinson founded Beacon House in the Edgewood Terrace neighborhood of Northeast Washington. Wal-Mart Confirms Expansion of Non-Discrimination Policy

In each of the past five years, the Unitarian Universalist Association has filed a shareholder resolution asking Wal-Mart to add Gender Identity or Expression to its non-discrimination policy. Recently, the UUA was notified by Wal-Mart’s Office of Diversity that they were adopting this policy and were disseminating it throughout their network of stores and distribution centers. 15 UUs Arrested During Tar Sands Action

More than 1,000 people were arrested in the past two weeks in front of the White House for protesting the proposed construction of an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. Tar Sands Action Inspired by UU's Civil Disobedience

Religious activists and organizations are gathering August 29 outside the White House as part of a two-week protest called Tar Sands Action, which is aimed at pressuring President Obama to reject a proposed oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. The United Nations has declared a famine in southern Somalia that is expected to spread in the next two months. With 3.2 million people — half of the Somali population — needing immediate lifesaving assistance, this is the world's worst food security crisis in the last 20years. Iowa UU Named Rural "Champion of Change"

In the middle of Iowa, where biological diversity can consist of fields of corn next to fields of soybeans, Linda Barnes wanted more. To make that happen, Barnes, a Unitarian Universalist, started a two-year degree program in Entrepreneurial and Diversified Agriculture. The program, now in its eighth year, caught the attention of the Obama Administration, and in July she was summoned to the White House, where she was recognized as a "Champion of Change" for rural America. UUA President Convicted in Civil Disobedience Case

On the one-year anniversary of his civil disobedience in Phoenix, while protesting Arizona’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants, UUA President Peter Morales stood trial in the Maricopa County Justice Court. With him in the July 29 trial were Salvador Reza, a lead organizer with the immigrant rights group Puente Arizona, and two others. Love Marches in Georgia Against Anti-Immigrant Legislation

On July 1, Georgia’s new state immigration law went into effect, following a federal court judge’s decision to enjoin a couple of the provisions, but allowing for most of them, similar to the law passed in Arizona last year. In response, Unitarian Universalists took part in a protest march and rally beginning at the state capitol on Saturday, July 2. Shareholder Resolution Advances LGBT Rights

In its continuing effort to persuade corporations to adopt policies protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees from discrimination, the UUA has assisted in a shareholder resolution urging a major defense contractor to protect its workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Fire Devastates Maine Church

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, Maine, suffered heavy damage in a fire that started in the early morning hours of Monday, June 6. The fire destroyed the entire rear of the building, gutting the first and second floors. The Northern New England District has set up a relief fund to aid in the repairs and rebuilding of the church. Eco-Village Rises in Haitiâ€™s Central Plateau

Recovery from last year’s devastating earthquake in Haiti has been painfully slow for the tens of thousands of Haitians who still sleep in tent cities in the capital of Port-au-Prince. UUA-UUSC Japan Fund Supports Religious Partners After Quake

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeast coast of Japan killed more than 12,000 people. Rev. Eric Cherry, director of the UUA's International Resources office, was in Japan recently to meet with the partner groups. He said many members of these groups were directly affected by the disasters. “The Rissho Kosei-kai itself has 35 to 40 congregations that have been damaged terribly." As of April 8, Unitarian Universalists had donated $200,000 to Japanese relief efforts. Decisions about how to use these funds will be made in cooperation with our partners, Cherry said. The UU Ministry for Earth (UUMFE) and the UUA have launched the 40/40 Campaign to help congregations take steps toward a more just and sustainable relationship to the environment. On April 22, 2011, Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations will celebrate Earth Day by holding worship services and making commitments focused on the theme of Sacred Waters. The Rev. Eric Cherry, Director of International Resources at the UUA, has just returned from meetings with our partners in Japan. While there, he learned of the latest recovery efforts in the wake of the recent earthquake and tsunami and delivered the Unitarian Universalist Association’s (UUA) message of condolence, spiritual support, and solidarity. The UU Ministry for Earth (UUMFE) and the UUA have launched the 40/40 Campaign to help congregations take steps toward a more just and sustainable relationship to the environment. On April 22, 2011, Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations will celebrate Earth Day by holding worship services and making commitments focused on the theme of Sacred Waters. Peter Morales, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA): "I'm pleased to announce the public release of the new five-page UUA Strategic Plan for Professional Ministries. The plan, developed by our Professional Ministries Task Force, outlines eight key recommendations gleaned from our 64-page Strategic Review of Professional Ministries Report. I cannot emphasize enough how valuable input from individuals and organizations has been in developing these recommendations, all of which can effectively be advanced through the efforts of UUA staff working closely with our partners and constituents.
