Making Unitarian Universalism 'Sticky' - Oct 16, 2011
10:00am Sunday service
For an idea to spread (and become sticky) you have to be able to remember it long enough to
accurately share it with someone else, this is an updated view of what was once called
the "UU elevator speech." But how do we make our message stick? We also join with our
UU brothers and sisters around the country to make Association Sunday a success. This year's
theme is "Celebrating Excellence in Ministries." In addition, with this week's
share the plate offering we acknowledge a year of your generosity. Thank you!

it in the spring?
Beloved Community - Sept 25, 2011
10:00am Sunday service
Ever since Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. brought to life the concept
of “Beloved Community” Unitarian Universalists have been using

and beyond our
Principles and Purposes?
Compassion - Sept 18, 2011
10:00am Sunday service
The first of a year-long series based on the book
"Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life" by Karen Armstrong. Because Armstrong believes
we are addicted to our non-life affirming behaviors, she has
created this "step program" toward living a compassionate life - the
one thing she believes will help this world. This year we will have the
opportunity to learn and practice these compassionate ways of being.
Every month on the third Sunday of the month we donate our loose offerings to a worthy
cause. The first Share-the-Plate Sunday will be September 18th. Donations will go to an organization
that provides relief to communities in Africa struggling with the effects of food insecurity and civil unrest.

experience of your summer. Perhaps it will come from a vacation
trip. Perhaps it will come from your home. You will be asked to write
a few words of explanation and what direction your water came

Creative Goodness: Grace Found in Community - May 30, 2010
9:00 a.m. and 11:00am Sunday services
We know how important the Unitarian Universalist (UU) communities we build are to each of us on a personal level.
Is there a liberal theology that can give UUs a framework for the spiritual fulfillment we
find in religious community? How does our commitment to community unify us in all of our diversity?
In addition to providing some possible answers to these questions, this service will be a celebration
of our unique UU religious communities. Guest Speaker: Reverend Fayre Stephenson, Program Director at Ferry Beach,
the Unitarian Universalist Camp and Conference Center on the shores of Saco Bay, Maine.

Now We Come of Age! - May 16, 2010
9:00 a.m. and 11:00am Sunday services
We don’t have a creed in our Unitarian Universalist tradition. We do have a free and responsible
search for truth and meaning. Participants in the Coming of Age program have been on a search this year,
discovering and articulating what they believe in their own hearts. At this worship service, we will
hear the credo statements of our young people and welcome them into a more mature stage of their lives
with the Coming of Age Ceremony.
Mother’s Day/Mother Earth - May 9, 2010
9:00 a.m. and 11:00am Sunday services
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, we will also celebrate and honor the Mother of us all with an invitation
to participate in the 40/40/40 campaign. What is 40/40/40? Unitarian Universalists (UUs) across the
continent have expanded Earth Day’s 40th anniversary on April 22nd to last 40 days. But we can take
it further than that by starting today and taking it to the end of the church year; by committing to
small and large daily actions for 40 days, for the sake of the Earth and all who live here.
Some UUs have made small lifestyle changes for 40-day to “test drive,” knowing that our personal
choices affect many aspects of global environmental justice. If 40 people in our congregation make
40-day commitments, we will receive special acknowledgement from the UUA's Ethical Eating Core Team.
Let’s do it together!

the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry, a ministry-at-large that dates back more than
180 years and is a shared social justice ministry comprised of nearly 50 UU congregations.

9:00 a.m. and 11:00am Sunday services

of the wonderful volunteers that keep FCU alive and hopping!

specifically welcome transgender people, and review some opportunities for spiritual
and congregational growth. Rev. Auffant is the first out transgender person to be

There is a beautiful, courageous heroine, an all powerful king, a loyal cousin, and a villain
(Boooooh!) who gets foiled by his own evil plans. The story of Purim calls for noisemakers and
boisterousness. It also teaches us about the randomness of life, having fun just because,
practicing solidarity and that it all looks different when you're upside down.

Whether it’s the soul-stirring strains of a lush organ prelude, the thrill of

choir members, we regularly hear from the congregation that music at FCU strengthens

It’s a Halloweenie Multigenerational Celebration! - October 25, 2009
9:00 a.m. &
11:00 a.m. services
Halloween. It isn’t rational and it isn’t dignified. But if you could be
anyone in the world, or any animal or anything or any idea, what
would you choose? Can you wear that persona to church today? Cast
aside proper church behavior and express yourself in wild, spooky,
crazy silliness! This service will be filled with spooky music, a silly
story and an underlying recognition that life and death don’t always
make sense. Sometimes you just have to howl. Or giggle. Or dance.
Costumes are encouraged (both children and adults). Rev. Marta and
Laurie Bilyeu, DRE lead the service.
Climate Change - October 18, 2009
9:00 a.m. &
11:00 a.m. services
What is the significance of the number 350? It is the carbon level
number (parts per million) in the atmosphere that scientists are
trying to get the rest of us to lower to. As people of faith there is a
lot that we can do toward this change to help save our planet. This
sermon is in anticipation of the local activities on Saturday, October
24th.
Personal Guiding Principles - October 11, 2009
9:00 a.m. &
11:00 a.m. services
This service will be dedicated to the theme of our personal “credos,”
or guiding principles. We have all heard the seven UU
denominational principles. But what are our personal guiding
principles? What are the values and internal rules that you strive to
live by? During the service four FCU members will share their
personal guiding principles. Come hear a friend, a person you
admire, or maybe someone you hardly know share what guides
them through their daily lives. Listen to their reflections and take
advantage of an unusual opportunity to re-visit a question close to
all of our hearts: how do I want to “be” in this world?
Adaptive Leadership - October 4, 2009
9:00 a.m. &
11:00 a.m. services
When faced with a problem, it’s good to know which

Rev. Marta unpacks this theory and shares how we
might apply it to our congregational as well as
personal lives.

challenged by.

Our guest speaker for this service is John Merson. John is

1965 and volunteered for Vietnam after infantry training. He arrived
in Vietnam in April 1966 and spent the next 13 months as a scout,
radioman, interpreter and team leader in an infantry platoon. He left
the service in 1968 and graduated from University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill in 1969 and Harvard Business School in 1971. He then
consulted to universities, school systems, and government agencies
on education policy and practices. He also worked for a dozen
computer companies, from new startups to IBM, as either an
executive or consultant from 1981 to 1997. His book,
War Lessons,

assessments of how to prevent it and ... also offers hope, suggesting

picture" helps a congregation find it's best match and, along with the
